The strange ritual described here is considered by most to be a kind of ancient oath where the person who goes between the cut animals promises if they don’t fulfill their side then they will become like these animals. See Jeremiah 34:18-19 for another refence to this kind of oath. But who goes between the animals in Genesis 15?

Meditate on Psalm 113:5-6: “Who is like the Lord our God, who is seated on high, who looks far down on the heavens and the earth?”
